Fiji Mud Refugium Starter 12 lb Bucket

Product Information

Fiji Mud is collected from rare mud patches, discovered by science years ago, which are found in clear uncontaminated seawater. These patches typically occur at 40 - 50 feet of cool, clear water just off the coral reef.

Fiji Mud is unique in its ability to release essential minerals and vital nutrients that will allow hard and soft corals to flourish whether you are starting a new refugium or topping up your existing one. This product contains all the major and minor trace elements as they naturally occur as well as an elaborate network of 5 - 100 micron size organisms that are critical for the success with Acropora and other small polyp stony corals.
Fiji Mud is available in two sizes. The Refugium Booster is 24 oz. net weight and the Refugium Starter tub is approximately 12 lbs. net weight.

Alternate use: this product can also be
added directly to your aquarium at the rate
of one teaspoon per 100 gallons twice
weekly. Mix with tank water and pour directly into water flow, the water will become cloudy but will return crystal clear overnight. This will add the essentials nutrients when no refugium is available

Q) What is the difference between ôRefugium Booster" and ôRefugium Starter"?
A) There is no difference in the actual product itself. However, ôRefugium Starter" is a twelve pound bucket and is sold in this size for those of you who are starting a new refugium and need a large amount or for those who simply want to purchase a large amount because of frequent use and the economy of the larger size.
On the other hand ôRefugium Booster" is sold in a 24 ounce size for those who simply need to top up their existing refugium with additional mud or just need a little extra on hand.

Q) Why is mud so important to my refugium set up?
A) Mud that is harvested from the ocean in clear water patches will contain all of the essential minerals and trace elements that are found in the sea in their natural state and composition. When your water passes over this concentration of minerals and elements in your refugium it caries with it some of the most important nutrients that you can furnish your system in its natural state.

Q) How long will ôFiji Mud" last in the package on my retailer's shelf?
A) As long as the product remains moist you can be sure that it will still have the active ingredients and minerals required to maintain the integrity of this product.
Since this is the only product that is actually harvested on the reef in the South Pacific it is truly unique in its composition and ability to benefit your captive reef system.

Q) How often will I need to add more mud to my refugium?
A) Some of the mud will naturally dissipate into the water column as the water flows over it. The change will be gradual and every tank or regugium will be different depending on flow. In general, it is a good idea to watch the level of mud and when you see it start to go down just add a little more. The standard height of mud in your refugium should be about 1 + - 3 inches depending on the algae and plants you are also trying to grow in the refugium.

Q) Do I need to replace any of the mud because the nutrients are used up?
A) The mud will naturally replace some of its own nutrients in the normal cycling and growth of the algae. However, it is recommended that every 4 — 6 months you do replace about 20% - 30% of the mud for a more vibrant and robust bed of fresh minerals and trace elements.

Q) If I do not have a refugium can the mud still benefit me?
A) If no refugium is currently being used in your system then the mud can still be used to benefit you reef with the essential (and all natural) minerals. This can be accomplished by simply adding some of the mud into your substrate on a regular basis. The formula for this method is listed on the jar and also at the end of this information card.

Q) I already have live sand in my refugium . can the mud still be added or do I need to discard the sand?
A) There is no need to discard the sand and we do not recommend doing this. The mud can be easily added to the the sand by either putting a layer of about 1 + inches on top of the sand or by mixing the sand and mud together. This will greatly benefit all of the advantages that your refugium is designed to provide.

Q) When I place the mud in my refugium should I expect the water to become cloudy and (if so) will this harm my tank?

A) Whenever you place mud in your tank you should expect the water to cloud up for a short period. If some of the mud settles on your corals do not worry, this happens in the ocean all the time and all you have to do is create some wave action in from of your corals to blow it off. However, the best way to add the mud is to turn your refugium off when mixing the mud in and let it stand until the mud settles in the refugium (usually 30 minutes — one hour) then restart your refugium for best results.
